Why I Hate Hippies
83Ok, so I really hate hippies. Not your 60's revoultion hippes mind you, but the late teens early 20 something retards that attempt to pass themselves off as hippies. This issue goes way beyond my hatred for Phish or anything like that. Honestly, part of my hatred for Phish comes from the patchouli infestation that is most of their fan base. Now i'm not saying everyone I know is like this, but i'll put it at 90% of the alleged "young hippie" population
I love nature, I love the outdoors, and I respect my envoirment. These should be universal ideas, not just those of the alleged "hippie" movement.
The fact is, Real hippies don't snort coke, smoke crack, or eat pills like candy....they take acid and mushrooms and wander off in the woods.
Real hippies aren't shady, lying and thieving moochers who grab whatever they can when no one is looking, and expect to make it through life by not doing anything even relatively productive.
Real hippies live in communes and share responsibilites, instead of doing nothing and living in their parents basements.
Real hippies don't have nappy, mite infested dreadlocks. Find me one freakin hippie in 1969 with dreadlocks, I challenge you. You're not a rasta, or indian, or egyptian.....you're a silly upper class cracker, now take some of mommy and daddys money and get a haircut.
Real hippies fight for causes that most alleged hippies know nothing about. They also actually take the time to read the newspaper before they open their ignorant mouths about something they know nothing about. Real hippies also protest things other than having to get a job.

My advice to you bums.
1.Grow up, the world will eat you alive otherwise. You'll be in your 30's, unemployed, and bitter that the world has passed you by. You'll feel cheated when the normal people you know are buying houses, getting promotions, and living happy lives. You'll blame the man, coporate society, or any other scapegoat that conveiently comes along.
2. Get a haircut and take a shower. Employers can't discriminate on race, creed, color or disability.....but they sure as hell can discriminate becasue you look like a scumbag and smell like rotten cheese. Unless you've been prepared for a life of putting your nappy hair in a net and making fries, working on a farm, or standing in the cold parking cars......you might want to listen to this one carefully.
3. The world isn't fair. This ain't disneyland kids. Life is not a movie nor a grateful dead concert. It's what you make it. Some people are blessed with everything they need at their disposal, others have to know when to take stock of what they have and what they want, and find a way to get to the destination they desire. No one is going to do it for you, you lazy shmuck.
4. Stop playing "fire on the mountian" at every damm oppourtunity. This has become the "free bird" of wannabe hippies. I swear if I hear this song at the tavern again I'm going to torch the place. I don't care if you added an extra gutiar riff, or added another 10 minutes to the song,.......it's still the same freakin song, and you and your buddies aren't Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir.
I'm sure there's more.....but I'm just going to get more pissed off and want to slap the next wannabe tree hugger I see, so I'll end it with this.
You are what you are to stand out and be accepted at the same time. This is nothing more than fitting into a group, while giving off the idea of non conformity. this is very similar to being goth back in the day, or even punk nowadays. You buy birkenstocks from a multibillion dollar corporation and drive SUV's and gas guzziling vans. When you buy into hippie culture, you are buying into a corporate sponsored image that has been worn thin for over 30 years. Find something new to spend your parents money on, you silly hippie.

I fee your paint about psuedo hippies but there is yet another variety you have not experienced. The know it all eco hippy who actually does live "off the grid". grows their own food and lusts for an electric car (which are really worse for the environment than a combustible engine) These are the Commie know it alls that think they can dictate to you what is the correct way to live and be. They have all the usual charactaristics of a fundementalist Christian but when a reverse type of ideaology. They are supremely boring and totally uncreative, yet they think they own the earth and the arts. They are usually lousy farmers, live in crappy houses they build and stink so bad that is should be against the law. Beware of these, they come in all ages and will be taking over year downtown area for a monotoneous drumming circle soon!

I agree: a real hippie is an activist and a renouncer of corporate nationalism. Someone with ambitions and plans in order to better the community, or even the world, as a whole. Such as myself (age 17), I am a "neo-hippie" and I have every intention of making a change in the world.
Young hippies just talk talk talk about what they're going to do. And they buy buy buy hippy stuff. But they don't really do anything but talk and buy. they complain complain complain. They are so into themselves. Just go to any hippy forum and see how everyone is trying to draw the attention to themselves. I think they act like a bunch of nazies, demanding that the world be just like them. They will all grow up on day, like everyone does. Right now they go on about how lofty and wonderful thier minds are while thier parents pay thier bills. When they've been out in the real world for a while they'll find that getting my demands most of your time and there's not much left for saving the world from all us conservatives.

Personaly I like being the underdog in an argument, because it feels so much better when you win. people are scared of change same as back in the day, this gose for both "hippies" and the rest of you plebs a.k.a. I also hate hippies.
I used to make the mistake of thinking some of them were OK. Then I saw so much more shadiness in that group of passive aggressive, egocentric, and patriarchal sociopaths than I had in any other segment of society.
All's hippies do is borrow cool shit from other cultures and subcultures to cover up the fact that all they really do is loaf around in a sleazy fashion and wait for an opportunity to rip somebody off.

in October 1967, they actually held a "The Death of the Hippie" ceremony in SanFrancisco because it was apparent that it wasn't working as a way of life... It is alarming that even after such a display, they still exist. I can't say that the original hippies didn't make a point in their time or make a change or an impression because I didn't live back then. But even back then, George Harrison went out there to see what all the fuss was about only to find a bunch of drugged out people doing nothing. Either way it doesn't matter; that was then and this is now. I've encountered a lot of these hippy types in the last decade or so and almost all of them are the same story. They're usually filthy rich suburban kids who can afford to drive all over the nation chasing after their favorite jam band or they're someone who is leeching off the aformentioned hippie. They'd tell me about some really great obscure band that does all kinds of genre blending and how talented they are. When they play it for me, it would sound just like every other jammy jam shit I've ever heard but with different instruments. This one guy was telling me that this band played bluegrass fusion or something and then played me this crappy unending gibberrish of someone noodling around on a banjo and had absolutely no bluegrass elements whatsoever. It was just the same simplistic hippie no beginning, no end noodling. It's a fricking disease! How do you not know that all of this crap has the exact same "feel" to it? I've also been dragged to a few of these concerts because my girlfriend's friend from high school knew one guy in the band. During their "break," which involved everyone emptying out behind the building to get high, everyone formed a circle and suddenly the old high school friend became a different person. The weed became way more important than hanging out with us and she wasn't too keen on trying to share either. The thing that I hate the most is how they get all preachy. This same chick moved out to go to school in California and was bragging about how there's this big revolution and how people are "waking up" over there as if I'm just so clueless about "what it's all about." Whatever these intensly socially sheltered individuals are waking up to is their newfound narrow-mindedness.
Never really given it much thought... but I have only really been close to one hippie andI have come to realize she is extremely selfish when tried to rip me off by lying and manipulating my good will (which is what they are supposed to be all about- good will toward others). I will never trust a hippie again, now that I have been had I realize they are all out for self! Come to think of it, at first she seemed cute and fun, then I realized she only called me when she wanted to be the center of attention, as in her opinion is the most innovative, defiant or otherwise out-of-the-box. Proud of buying stinky old thrift store clothes (not REALLY vintage just old and gross) Stereotypically she does not bathe very often, brags about being a vegetarian, works odd jobs found on craigslist, smells like patchoulie and hangs out with pretty much only lesbians, even though she is not one. I totally thought her boyfriend was gay. Beside all of these points my main message to you all that my experience has led me to believe most modern day "hippies" however fun and laid back are selfish, and that is no way to give back to society.

Well, I know what you lot mean in general. But those so called hippies arnt their own species, they are individuals too, with (believe it or not) personalities. The whole Hippie subculture in general is cancer. Now those you mentioned that care about the enviroment and the animals are not hippies, because hippies inject themselves with dirty needles,and ruin their brains with all kinds of coke meth and pot, thus polluting the air we breathe with all that smoke. People just need to grow the fuck up. Really, I stand strong that protesting does little to nothing in the end. If someone wants something done, then they need to throw on there thinking caps, go to college and study law, business or other important skills that can actually be applied to the real world. And even if something was to be by Hippies, it is ussually something no one cares about but them, which these days is more then you'd think.

Seriously. I agree. I have grown up right outside San Francisco. My home town is one to which TONS of 1960's hippie musicians moved after the Haight/ Ashbury. The dead, Janis Joplin, and many others. I have been bombarded by people telling me these stories about the 1960s hippie thing my whole life. This area was a stop over from northern CA and San Francisco. Lots of more modern hippies that are still babbling about Jerry and acid would come through. I HATE ALL THIS BULLSHIT!! I have found that people from the East Coast seem to be more accepting of hippie crap, maybe because it was not the mecca of all things hippie for the last 40 years. All the hippies I have met are, as others have said, out for themselves, and totally passive aggressive and full of shit. Look, I believe in taking care of the environment, am very liberal politically, and like a lot of the music from the SF 1960's groups. But I have found that even old hippies who were there in the 60's think their ideas were silly and childish. GET REAL HIPPIES, and get a job.

I love this post. My uncle and his damned kids are exactly like what you just described. Use and use and use all they want to and have no care as to how it gets replaced. anyway I'll make a list so here goes.
1. Don't know where they are going in life or how in the hell to get there, how they will finance themselves to get there or what to do when they get there but they believe firmly and wholeheartedly that the situation will resolve and work itself out.
2. Expect you to do their job for them. That becasue your a friend or family you should be the sole bread winner and they can just do whatever and get by and then they get all mad and upset when you say no because they believe that anything you have is and should be at their disposal.
3. Last but not least I believe firmly in helping someon out. Especially a family member when they need it or when it warrants, but enough is enough damn it. Get off your ass, go find a job, and start providing for yourself becasue I am not going to do it for you.

Im sort of a hippie, i am also religious. I am a true believer, i dont even dress like a hippie or take drugs or anything. When you say you hate hippie you are also saying i hate those, animal loving, environment loving, peace loving, anti-war people. I was a "hippie" and on tour with the Grateful Dead much of the 80s.
We traveled the country, met people, made friends, saw National Parks and became familiar with the entirety of the US. We danced and laughed and loved each other. We helped each other and learned ways to make money to support our travels.
And now - 20 some odd years later - most of the hippies I was on tour with are all reconnecting on facebook - and guess what?
We are cafe owners and acupuncturists and nutritionists, respected herbalists, brewery owners, artists supporting themselves, computer professionals, landscapers, photographers supporting themselves, boutique owners, farmers, organic food suppliers, owners of construction or restoration businesses. We are scientists, locally famous chefs, prominent in the solar energy movement, midwives, actors, fisherman (commercially.) We are writers and magazine publishers and programmers. We are restaurateurs, genealogists, graphics designers, concert promoters, cameramen for tv, yoga teachers, grade school teachers, mountain climbing guides, ski instructors...
Sheesh! I could go on and on. I am positively AMAZED to see how many of us own our own businesses – myself included.

I am currently living with one of the most annoying hippies of all time! She smokes pot, in the house. She complains about the major corpoarations, so thats why she buys at Wholefoods for organic products, which I think is a great idea. She says we should support the smaller organic farming industry, this is good. However she has no fuking money, no job, so therefore go's to wholefoods and steals food from them, contradicting b^&*$! Then here food go's foul so quick (being organic) she turns to me and says my food looks good and wants to eat it, but still feels fine cause she buys/steals organic food! OMG! In my early 20's, I was considered a hippy. I even had white girl dreadlocks and smoked pot, was vegan, etc. As soon as I stopped smoking weed, my entire philosphy changed...I realized that all of my hippy "friends" were only friends if we were all stoned. I realized the music sucked if you weren't high. I began to see that the hippy culture were all white, middle class losers ("trust-ifarians", living off daddy's college fund) and that for all of the equality bs they talked, they really were the most mysogynistic, close minded, judgemental group of people ever. I am now sorry and embarrassed that I ever participated in this culture, now that I've sobered up.

now, i dont call myself a hippie, but i have a friend who i would say is one. she always respects and loves the environment and other people. she is constantly helping people and being kind to all living things. she donates to charities and does so much volunteer work she barely has time for anything else. she has never touched pot, or any other drug, and is a vegan.
as well as all this she never tries to push her beliefs upon others. if people ask her about it, she will explain to them calmly and rationally and supports her arguement with a wide general knowlege and understanding of current events.

This article was an informal rant, nothing more. That's actually one of the biggest problems with web content at this point in history: stuff that should be recognized as being informal and conversation-like gets passed off as being much more legitimate content than it really is.
I have a feeling that a lot of people who posted on here work in low-end managerial positions and think that they have really great work ethic. I bet your work ethic sucks more than you think, guys. I've worked with plenty of people in management positions who think that donning a persona of faux-jaddedness (of a slightly conservative, nationalistic, pro-capitalist bent) makes them more informed and grown-up. Many times, these people have worse work ethic than they realize by virtue of the fact that many jobs require you to confirm your work habits to some highly-regulated workflow handed down from on high within the corporation. This workflow is not necessarily geared towards providing a great customer experience or doing honest work, rather the emphasis may be on maximizing profit while maintaining an illusion of "honest, competent professionalism" via vague, whiz-bang terminology and extensive compartmentalization (so that no one ever has a broad enough perspective to truly understand the impact of their actions).
Face it, the current societal is schema is one of many potential schemas. Go ahead and argue that it's the best possible schema for the time being, but contemporary corporatism is a far cry from Adam Smith's capitalism and just because you have a job and earn lots of douchey swag doesn't mean you are actually truly productive in a genuine and meaningful way. Plenty of companies are run by idiots or slowly going bankrupt. Keep pushing those units, popping out kids, and rocking the suburbs, guys. Have fun.

I don't hate everyone that smokes pot, nor do I really have anything against pot itself, but what I utterly cannot stand is the stand proclaiming: "I'm a functioning pothead.." What the fu-k does that mean? By functioning are you stating that you are waking up, going to work, getting paid and paying your bills? Wake up call buddy: that's a requirement of life. I smoked pot in High School, and then I realized it was just another phase of my adolescent teen angst. My parents did not approve of it, so right then and there I felt as if I were gaining something by spiting them. Teachers didn't approve, etc. And what it really did was create a murky cloud over all the feelings associated with adolescence and puberty. The lack of oxygen to the brain masked emotions, my young teen mind thought it was helping me cope with every day teen troubles, what it really did was create a false sense of security and completely modified reality to my liking.
I grew out of it, stopped at once, I'm a musician in a heavy metal band, I'm around it all the time, and I constantly have to deal with the people I meet endlessly advocating the use of marijuana and it's beneficial properties.

Ok. I have been called a hippie before. I have no issue with this. I don't really consider myself a hippie and if I am, I'm ok with it. I don't really have a good definition as to what a "hippie" is or should be. However, from what I can tell, the majority of the people who I have met who make a point of being a "hippie" are just posers. They are kids who want to look and behave a certain way simply because it draws attention to them I guess. But to be fair, you can say the exact same thing about any other subculture, am I right?
I never understood why people seem to have this hate toward hippies. I have a fried who hates them because he finds them to be annoying with their "constant protesting". To each their own I suppose.

To me, being a “hippie” means practicing being nice to all people…it means loving your enemies (…don’t knock it till you try it!), it means avoiding high school drama…I think it’s okay to want bigger things for society, but I think it really all starts with yourself. Being a “hippie” to me, means having yourself in order so you don’t add to the suckiness of the world.
..One thing I will never forget was a couple of years ago…I was going through this phase where I was soo concerned with Darfur…then one night, I forgot to feed my dog…my dad got sooo mad…he told me I wasn’t aloud to talk about or do anything to do with Darfur until I realized the importance of not forgetting to feed my pets. And really, I think my dad was so right..
A lot of people automatically assume that when I say I’m for “peace” and “nonviolence” I’m stupid…but I think of what Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see.” And so, I practice being happy and peaceful (yeah, it takes practice) and I don’t ever fight with people, don’t hit my sisters.
So, I think being hippie starts on a personal level. And I can’t imagine that people could object to that, lol….then again, you never know.
I know, there are a lot of “hippies” (and really just people) out there that steal and free load…but, I can say, I think that’s wrong…and I know many of my friends think the same thing.
I think another key element to this is not thinking anyone person is better than the next...that’s hippie to me.
When I think about life and people…well, I know we can focus on our differences because they seem so prevalent sometimes…but really, I think we should focus on our sameness. We all come into this world with genetics and life throws experiences at us, and we become who we become because of everything else.

I'm also a graduate student with two jobs and an internship. I'm the primary care provider for my grandparents. I have been married for 7 years and have two kids. My husband is also gainfully employed and in school. We both bathe regularly and never wear dirty clothing. We live in a house and are pretty poor but definitely wealthier than most of the world.
I don't care for pot or Patchouli or Phish or cultural appropriation, but I do strongly support the root issues established in the "hippie" movement of the 1960's- supporting local business, ending violent conflict at home and abroad, participating in non-violent civil disobedience when it is relevant, speaking one's mind and participating in government, eating healthily and with consideration for the environment, reducing personal impact on the earth and promoting a lifestyle that cultivates peace and tolerance, gender equality and non-restrictive clothing. I eat organic and grow whatever I can for myself. I don't buy things from big box stores and I'm frightened by the power that corporations are gaining over our daily lives. I'm a vegetarian. I recycle and compost. I absolutely identify as a hippie.
I am fully aware of my own contradictions (for example, I drive a car, and I drink soymilk- both of which are highly damaging to the environment). But I still try to live my life in a way that limits my negative impact on the world. I care about other people and I'm accepting of other's beliefs even when they're not congruent with my own. I'm NOT stupid, or dirty or misguided or selfish or deceitful or dangerous.
My point here, folks, is that "hating hippies" is illogical, ignorant, and pointless. Hating me doesn't do you any good, and poisoning a useful and fairly positive word, "hippie", which has identified and defined a group of people for 40 years now, and lumping me and all the other "hippies" of the world in with crack-fiend dead-beat asshole social parasites... well, it's wrong.

My friends in college all listened to Phish and the Dead and nothing else. They followed Phish and racked up credit card debt. One of them married a girl with no education but who was really into blue grass and the "scene" and they had a baby. Now they are declaring bankruptcy and loosing their house because it turns out going to festivals doesn't pay the bills.
That being said, I would take a hippy any day of the week over a republican, a christian or a member of the military. I just wish they wouldn't assume I'm going to pay for everything because I have a job and that is ok to steal from me because I have a job.

Wow- a lot of people on here have a lot of anger. I feel badly for those of you who are looking at a whole group of people and letting a few bad ones ruin your perspective of the rest. Every "classification" of people will have those that lie, steal and manipulate. Yes some people do like the hippie "image" and hide under that. But a lot of us "hippies" are very aware.
I live in a communal house with a lot of other so called "hippies." We have a house that is almost completely green. We compost, recycle, use homemade green cleaning products, eat healthy, exercise regularly, etc. We also all have full time jobs, maintain our house and yard, bathe regularly, read up on current events and try to be active in our community. We make our house work (as many as 10 roomies at times- completely drama free) because we all see the benefits of living like this. We do not lecture other people on their ways of living or act like we are above anyone else. We have never had problems with theft or dishonest people. We are ALL happy to have a happy, clean, comfortable home with wonderful roomies.
You will see in people what you want to see in people. If you want to see dirty smelly druggies that aren't socially aware- those are the people that will start to surround you. If you want to start seeing people that do care and try to make a difference, you will. You manifest your own reality!
There's no such thing as hippies anymore just as there aren't any punks. All of these labels are simply classifications for how people dress themselves.

I will never understand one thing about the hippies and their generational push: They preached peace, love and no discrimination, and yet they spat on returning soldiers, carried on like a bunch spoilt arseholes, treated the returning soldiers, who had horrific psychological and physical injuries like they were nothing more than a dog's breakfast C) 1660. The hippies then expected everyone to bow down to their way of thinking. This must of being very confusing for normal people considering the fact the hippies espoused the virtues of peace and yet displayed nothing of the kind to the people who really needed it. We are talking about conscription,and conscripition it was! The hippies did't even consider the people they targeted, they did not consider these soldiers, their family values or the fact that were law abiding citizens who were called up to service by a country they loved. The hippies never considered that maybe the young men who were called up felt fear, were terrified, felt a duty to their country, no what the outcome. The soldiers went, and did the best they could in a situation that was impossible. There was no preaching of love and compassion from the so called love brigade when they returned, which is weird considering that was their catch cry. I see hippies as communists, it's their way or the highway and they demonstrated this time and time again. Hippies were all about free sex, love and drugs which, in today's society, means you don't have to take responsibility for yourself, you can become addicted to major drugs, get an STD and for some miraculous reason it someone else's fault and the rest just have to bare it. Communist I would thing best describes the hippies.
Danielle, I agree with you, hippies are dictatorial hypocrites who try telling you how to live and then live something completely opposite. They preach peace and then behave the exact opposite as you mentioned in your response. They have no respect for people with differing viewpoints, yet they claim that tolerance is important to them. They are, on average, very egotistical and condescending. You have pretty much summed up my feelings on hippies. They should practice what they preach, and society should call them on it when they don't, and that's why I greatly dislike hippies.

I once dated a hippie chick. All she did was smoke dope and sleep until noon. Then she would spend the afternoon watching TV and commenting about how the world was going to hell. Of course, she loved Jerry Springer. She once fell the stairs because she was stoned and threatened to sue the apartment complex for making unsafe stairs. I went fishing the other day in my boat. It has no motor only an anchor. I get around by letting the wind and the current move me. There's nothing quite wrong with hippies, except there's nothing quite right with them, either. That being said, as a moderate liberal, (nowadays) they make liberals look bad. Back then, in the 1960s, their message had more of a context within the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and the counterculture. Today, what is their message? Have nothing to do with the civilized world of shelter and getting a life and living in nature's splendor, while doing nothing for the rest of their lives? Promote peace, yet not even getting their lazy butts outta their pot-induced fantasies and setting foot outside of the U.S. to go see the insurgency in Iraq, the drug cartels wars in parts of Mexico, and the conflict between Israel and Palestine? Take as much drugs as you can? Ask to legalize marijuana, yet knowing absolutely nothing about various other liberal causes? Stay without a home or shelter for as long as you can? Now, they are the radical equivalent to Republican rednecks.
Nobody can really say what a hippie is. They all vary, just as everybody's unique. i almost fell into the hippie lie when i was in college..i can tell you the day i burned my tie dies and threw my phish cds in the trash..we had a homeless awareness rally(yes i said awareness)where all the hippies from the suny sytem in new york congregated..listened to some stupid speakers talk about homelessness for a minute and bash America,Capitalsim,any conervative leaning politician,for 45 minutes. During the rally,an actual homeless man showed up..he was drunk,and yelling at the speaker,,turns out he was a viet nam vet and didn 't like hearing the country he fought for and loved being trashed,soon the speaker turned the crowd on the homeless man,at a homeless awareness rally,he was soon pelted with bottles and assaulted by two of the hippies,unfortunately,we couldn 't to him fast enough to save him from a severe beating he received,i left the bitch i was dating who was yelling insults at him,another young woman and i carried him to a hospital and made sure he was prpoperly cared for,,the next day i never referred to myself as a hippie ever again,changed my major from horticulture to Physical Therapy assistant,and work in A VA Center for the last 30+ years..and oh by the way,,the young lady who helped me carry the gentleman to the hospital,,we're expectong our 3rd grandchild next spring...i guess being a hippie had one good thing

Way back when hippies would hitch hike and smoke weed at the 1969 Woodstock festival, they proved to us that 500,000 people can be in the same enviornment, get along, and love each other.
Personally, I believe hippies should be those who believe in peace (of course), love amongst different races, religions, animals, nature; generally the entire world. You aren't a hippie if you wear a flower in your hair and make a peace sign in a photo you post on facebook.
Young "Hippies" today tend to be really spoiled and think they're creating good in the world, when really, when it's our time to be doctors and teachers, we'll destroy everything the 1960's generation created for us.

i may not have been alive in the '60s [sadly], but i do consider myself a hippie because i feel like i have the mind of one. i am a pacifist and a humanist and believe in animal rights. i don't do drugs or whatever and have never done so, but i would consider smoking cannabis or trying acid. i strongly believe in many causes. it makes me sad when dumb kids claim they are one when they just wear a shirt with a peace sign that was most likely assembled in a sweatshop.

so much truth there... I am in a similar situation.
I am an open honest kind of person, I don't hate what I don't understand, I try to see things for what they are and I try to not pass judgement on others. I care about others and I am sincere in my actions and words. I wear jeans and shirts and don't have dreads. I don't need to dress a certain way and close my mind to live by the simple values of treat other how you wish to be treated. But, because I listen to metal (as well as most of genres of music) watch TV, and don't dress like a hippy, I am on the recieving end of some of the most vile and negative hateful behaviour at work. I don't dress in a way that puts me in a neat little box to be labled and I don't define the person I am by what I wear, I don't belong to a clique and my circle of friends are the most diverse group of people, its thru our differences that we really discover how similar we are at the end of the day which is what makes us friends and keeps us interested in each other.
I work with "hippies" that I have found to be some of the most untrustworthy, negative, nasty, judgmental and close minded people I have ever met. I have also come to understand that these same people are also the most insecure and messed up people I have ever crossed.

Being a productive citizen is completely subjective. I personally know middle aged hippies who've spend the past 25 years jobless and following bands around. I used to be a hippie i worked for greenpeace and was really good at my job made some really awesome friends and had a beautiful hippie girlfriend .Everything was great and i was only nice to all them until my girlfriend dumped for some weird reason and later i found out she fucked one of my greenpeace friends and a lot of other shit .They all knew about it but didn't say a thing and they all knew how heartbroken i was over her but were really two faced about the situation .My boss at greenpeace who was from California asked her out on a date when i was going to him for advice and a shoulder to lean on and he went behind my back and asked her out on a date without saying a word to me.I was nice to them always wanted to help out and be there for them but they took advantage of me and then only called or texted me when they needed something .I want to say that if your a hippie and care about so much in the world how could you do that to somebody who was nothing but nice to you .Beats me

While reading through all of these posts, I realized something that seems to escape notice by most people: People are animals! We do what we do for very specific ends. Survive, Procreate, or facilitate either. Here's an idea: Just live your life! I don't like anyone telling me how to live mine... and I seriously doubt anyone who has posted since the article was written wants someone telling them how to live either. That's my biggest problem with "hippies" or "zealots" or whoever. You really have no concept of what is best for me or my family. I have no concept of what is best for yours. Unfortunately, we all know how modern life is structured. Part of facilitating your survival or reproduction means "conforming" or adapting to the constraints of your environment. If folks spent half as much time taking care of themselves as they did worrying about others, there would probably be no place for hippies, religious zealots, right wingers, left wingers or any of it. I kind of like the pioneer mentality.... take what you have available to you, and make the best life you can out of it.... and don't wet your pants about the guy 10 miles away, unless he's stealing your shit, then shoot his ass.
I find annoying, hypocritical people in every subgroup, but the more idealistic someone poses their selves to be, the more their hypocrisy will be highlighted. This is true of Christians, environmentalists, multi-culturalists, animal rights people, and anyone who carries around any high minded ideals. This doesn't mean having high minded ideals is necessarily a bad thing, just that you have a longer, more burdensome walk to walk if you're talking the talk.
As far as the term, "hippie" goes, I haven't really ever heard anyone describe their selves as such. I think its like the term "cynic". People in the ancient Roman empire, who lived austere life styles and rejected Roman excess were stereotyped as "cynical", meaning dog-like. The assumption was that if they rejected what was perceived as the highest pinnacle of civilization, they must have been barbarous or lesser humans.
I have friends that live very austere lives that would be crammed into the "dirty hippie" stereotype. A muralist I know actually lives in a van with his organic farmer girlfriend. They(meaning those that have an appearance, lifestyle, and outlook that media and mainstream would call hippie) are not all just hypocritical rich kids. I try to engage with everyone really and judge everyone on an individual level, whether they be "hippies" or young Republicans. Hardly anyone wears the term "hippie" on a badge either. From what I gather from the responses I've read, "hippie" is more of a subjective appearance that's judged than a real subcultural organization.
There are no more hippies. There are Rastas, there are PC tree huggers, and there are folkies. Rastas smoke weed and hate homos, PC tree huggers hate everyone in the most polite way possible, and folkies can be downright racist. So whenever you see an Idealistic wingnut you call him a hippy and blame it all on hippies. Theres just left leaning a holes and right leaning a holes!
Actually, all of you saying that "young hippies" arn't "real hippies" are wrong. I'm a hippie. But I don't do drugs. I make peace. I prefer a nice tent to a house any day. I don't sit there and blame the "man" for my problems, they're my fault and I fix them. Instead of fighting I try to talk things out, yes, but if the need arises I will. I am an avid camper, hiker, biker, and have even gone on some long walks across the country with a back pack.
The great thing is that when I returned from the great outdoors, I clocked back into my job and made a pay check. I pay as many taxes as I see fit, donate occasionally to causes. I am a humanitarian. I don't believe in war, but I do believe in freedom and the defensive procedures required to maintain said freedom.
I will always get my hair cut and find a way to use soap. Being clean keeps you healthy. I pay back all that I ever borrow, including my mortgage and credit cards.

I had a couple come to my door one morning, both dirty and wearing ripped up potato sack clothing with long greasy hair and piercings and tattoos galore. They asked for a handout of food and water. Hitler had nothing to do with Hippies you retard. He murdered Jews! I agree that most modern hippies only act on, and respond to things that allow them to appear gracious and "for nature". But in the end the only way anything will make a real impact, is by impacting what is real. Helping to develop technologies, systems or methods for changing the world will leave an impact. Jumping into a tree and growing your own mushrooms doesn't really help anyone. However, there is still a strong underlying culture of young people that wish to change this world. Just like fighting to end the war, they aim to protest against that which is wrong. Take a look at what is happening due to sites like wikileaks and Kony 2012. People are fighting for what they believe in, they are fighting for freedom. Those are the true hippies.

The Vietnam War was a Cold War-era military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. This war followed the First Indochina War and was fought between North Vietnam, supported by its COMMUNIST allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States of America and other ANTI-COMMUNIST countries.
So actually you don't have a f*ing clue about the vietnamese war and how the americans protected the south form COMMUNISM...
At the height of the war, which the United States entered in secrecy and dishonestly, no one seriously thought that a communist victory in Vietnam would endanger the American people. The most anyone predicted was that U.S. ally Japan would be at risk, which of course it wasn't. The domino theory was falsified: Japan remained free of the communists, along with Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand. Meanwhile the unified Vietnam fought Red China and invaded fellow communist country Cambodia, ruled by the murderous tyrant Pol Pot.
Some of the guilt-ridden war avoiders feel bad that because they didn't go, someone else did and perhaps died. This is an unwarranted shouldering of responsibility. If you lock your doors and burglars therefore break into your neighbor's house, you are not responsible for the crime. The burglars are. Likewise, if you prevent the politicians from treating you like cannon fodder and they victimize someone else, they are responsible for that crime.
Thus no one who avoided the war on the grounds that he had better things to do with his life or that the United States had no business there should feel the least bit ashamed of what he did.
The other reaction that deserves scrutiny is this: When the United States left Vietnam, the North Vietnamese invaded the south and established a communist tyranny; therefore, the United States was right to have fought. That's a non sequitur. In support of this argument, various ex-communists-turned-neoconservatives, such as David Horowitz, say, in effect, "We were wrong when we said a North Vietnamese victory over the United States and South Vietnam would bring peace and freedom."
There's one problem with this argument. The case against U.S. intervention in Vietnam did not depend on the absurd view that Ho Chi Minh was a Vietnamese Thomas Jefferson. Libertarian and other non-leftist critics of the war, building their case on the principles of the old Robert Taft wing of the Republican Party, argued that U.S. intervention was wrong regardless of Ho's philosophy. (In fact, he was a nationalist communist.)
Why was intervention wrong if it would prevented communism in South Vietnam? It was wrong, as suggested above, because it violated the rights of Americans not to be cannon fodder for American politicians. It was wrong because it was not our business to pick up the colonial mantle dropped in 1954 by the defeated French. It was wrong because savagely bombing people on the other side of the world who were no threat to us was wrong. None of that was changed by the fact that North Vietnamese imposed an abominable dictatorship when the United States left. As a matter of fact, had we stayed out, South Vietnam would very likely have been in a better position to repulse the communists of the North and their agents in the south.
The war was immoral and unconstitutional-Congress never declared war. It sent 58,000 young American men to their graves, along with some two million Vietnamese. It accelerated the decline of American liberty and the growth of government. That's a pretty damning indictment.

And all of you that are name calling and judging have no idea about what its like to just stop being into yourself and start learning something new. Most of you maybe met a hippie imitation and they could have just in general be a bad person. I personally have not met a terrible hippie. Then again they don't exist. These people wearing hippie clothing are not hippies.. I'm alternative myself o tend to wear randoms I don't don't into a category but I could pass as maybe scene or most of you would call me "emo" which isn't even close I don't wear BAM t's etc. I wear a lot of dark makeup have red and black hair the side of my head is shaved. Some hippies never stopped getting loaded and failed to grow up so now they have to live in their son's and daughter-in-law's home. I didn't mind hippies until my deadbeat MIL told me I wasn't cool because I won't giver her everything of mine that she wants. If that is what it takes to be cool and fit in then I'll never be cool. So is my husband. He looks clean cut, I look like a hippie, we are productive members of our community and we share the same values. You cannot judge a book by its cover...either way.

Okay I've been called a "hippie" my entire life (20 yrs old) I am my own individual. I don't smoke pot actually, I do have dreadlocks because they are beautiful despite what some people think, I have my own apartment, I pay my own bills, I pay for my own groceries I am responsible. I have the great misforture of residing in Asheville, N.C. It is embodyment of Planet Stupid. There are no intelligent lifeforms I can ascertain here. The Hippies stagger about in filthy rags and are reminiscent to street urchins of the 15th Century. Tragicly... someone forgot to inform them that its not 1560 anymore.
Soap was discovered in England in 1670. Three hundred years later they can't find a bar. Having bacteria festering on your skin reminiscent to the Dark Ages cannot be a healthy lifestyle.
